Tender young leaves are torn. Seedlings may be entirely eaten. Birds may be seen feeding in the garden, or their tracks may be noticed around the damaged plants.
Birds are fond of ranunculus and frequently eat the tender parts of the plants. Individual birds may develop the habit of feeding on ranunculus, and visit the plants every day.
Protect emerging shoots and young transplants with cages or coverings made of 1-inch-mesh chicken wire. Cages about 10"x10"x24" are self-supporting. Larger cages may need to be reinforced with heavy wire. Cheesecloth cages supported with stakes, wire, or string may also be used.
